Interactive patterns of Design: iOS and Android

It is necessary to keep in mind certain things while we design for these two major platforms of mobile. The apps released for Android and iOS are the most popular amongst the rest. On comparing some of the Android and iOS application designs as well as the interactions, certain variances could be found. BrandStory Digital builds apps for both the platforms.

Be it Material Design suggestion of Google or the Human Interface Design of iOS, Brandstory has it all.

It is feasible to begin with the variances in the designing philosophy. Material Design is a design language that is created by Google. It consists of a video that showcase the manner in which the design was created. For any designs related to Android, it is advisable to check this out. BrandStory keeps a check on the number of suitable tools for checking the UI patterns and the test designs also. In terms of iOS, guidelines related to Human Interface Design are put forth by Apple. A number of design patterns for iOs apps can be outlined. We build apps keeping all the rules in mind.

Easy Navigation

Scrolling up and down the screen is common among the app users. Android has provided with a universal navigation bar which is not only convenient but is also beneficial while using apps. BrandStory has put forth the idea that this approach is quite different when it comes to iOS. As there is no back button so it alters the entire design thereby providing a button on top left corner on every app screen. A comparison was made between the both in the LinkedIn app.

Understanding the Different Navigation Patterns

Each app has various areas that are organized as tabs. The manner in which it is executed is quite different. On comparing the various apps it was observed by Brandstory that in Android, the different areas are simple tabs on the top and showcases icons, on the other hand, iOS has that right at the bottom with suitable labels.

Swiping Left and Right for Going Back

It is necessary to consider the ‘back button’ feature on Android. As this feature is lacking in iPhones so Apple introduced a new feature of swiping from left to right in the apps. This feature works in most apps which has somehow shown differences in the tab navigations. In order to maintain consistency with other apps the discrepancies between Android and iOS is necessary to understand.

Call to Action Buttons

Action buttons allows the users to take stringent action. These buttons are likely to have a high primacy and visibility than the others. Some actions that are given more priority includes Tweet, Upload, Post update. Floating Action Buttons are the Material Design
that are used on Android. Several apps on iOS follows separate pattern and place action buttons.

The Setting Button in the Apps

A different approach in this respect is also used for apps in both platforms. Few of the most popular patterns on Android include the Hamburger menu and the on iOS it is the tabbed menu. As witnessed, there has been deviation in the pattern. In terms of the iOS, it has the bottom tab approach but does not have any labels.

All the apps do not follow separate interactions and the UI patterns of designs. Some of the apps were observed to follow the Material Design Patterns on iOS whereas the rest follow the Human Interface model on both iOS and Android.
